Why Your Social Media Isn’t Bringing In Customers (and What to Post Instead)

MarketingOctober 2, 20262 min read

You post consistently. You follow the tips. You get a few likes, maybe a nice comment from your aunt. And customers? Not so much.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: most business content is about the business. Buyers don’t care about your business yet. They care about their problem. Content that doesn’t touch their problem gets scrolled past, no matter how pretty it is.

The three reasons social media doesn’t sell

1. It talks to everyone, so it reaches no one

If your post would make equal sense to a teenager, a retiree and a CEO, it’s too general. Picture one ideal customer and write every post for them.

2. It shows the product, not the result

People don’t buy a haircut, a roof or a coaching program. They buy how they’ll look, feel or live afterwards. Show the after.

3. There’s no next step

Great posts end with nowhere to go. Every post should make one small, clear ask: comment a word, click the link, send a DM, take a quiz.

A content mix that brings in buyers

Try this simple rotation each week:

  • Teach (2 posts): answer a question your customers ask you all the time. This builds trust and gets saved and shared.
  • Prove (1 post): a before-and-after, a client result or a short testimonial. This makes people believe it works for someone like them.
  • Show you (1 post): behind the scenes, your story, why you do this. People buy from people.
  • Invite (1 post): a direct, friendly offer with a clear next step.

Most businesses only do the last one (“Book now! 20% off!”) and wonder why it feels like shouting into the void. The first three earn the right to make the fourth.

Measure the right thing

Likes feel good but don’t pay bills. Track conversations started: DMs, comments with questions, link clicks, inquiries. If a type of post starts conversations, make more of it.

Social media is only one level

Even perfect content can’t fix a weak offer or a sales process that loses people after they reach out. If you’re getting attention but not customers, the problem may be further down the line. Find out where in two minutes with the free Mirrorline Audit.
