Ask any business owner where their best customers come from and most will say “referrals.” Ask them how they get referrals, and most will say “I don’t know, they just happen.”
Referrals that “just happen” are a fraction of what’s possible. When you build a simple system around them, they become your most reliable source of new business.
Why most businesses don’t get more referrals
- They never ask, because it feels awkward or needy.
- They ask at the wrong time, like when sending an invoice.
- They ask too vaguely: “Let me know if you know anyone!”
When to ask
Ask right after a win: when a customer thanks you, shares a result, or tells you how happy they are. That’s when they’re most excited about you and most likely to think of someone.
How to ask
Be specific. Don’t ask if they know “anyone.” Describe the exact person:
“I’m so glad this worked for you. Can I ask a favor? Who else do you know who’s dealing with what you were dealing with a few months ago? I’d love to help them the same way.”
“Who else do you know” works better than “do you know anyone” because it assumes they do, and it gets them thinking of real names.
Make it easy
- Offer to send them a short message they can forward.
- Give them a simple link to share, like a free resource or quiz, so they’re giving a gift, not making a sales pitch.
- Always thank them, and tell them what happened with the person they referred.
Should you reward referrals?
A thank-you gift or a discount on their next purchase can help, especially for repeat-purchase businesses. But most people refer because they genuinely want to help their friend, and because you made it easy. Great service plus a clear ask beats a big reward every time.
Build it into your system
The best referral programs aren’t programs at all. They’re a step in your follow-up: a planned moment 30 days after a sale where you check in, celebrate the result and ask. If your follow-up is patchy, referrals are the first thing to fall through the cracks. See where your business is leaking with the free Mirrorline Audit.
