How to Choose a Marketing Agency (and 7 Red Flags to Avoid)

MarketingOctober 16, 20262 min read

Too many business owners have a marketing agency horror story: big promises, a long contract, beautiful reports, and no new customers. It happens so often that many owners give up on agencies entirely.

A good agency can transform a business. The trick is knowing how to spot one.

What to ask before you sign

  • “How will you measure success?” The answer should be leads, sales and revenue, not just likes, impressions or traffic.
  • “What happens after a lead comes in?” If they have no answer, they’ll bring you attention and leave you to figure out the rest.
  • “Can I talk to a current client?” Good agencies have happy clients who’ll take your call.
  • “What do you need from me?” Honest agencies are clear that results need your input too.
  • “What if it doesn’t work?” Listen for a clear, confident process, not a vague reassurance.

7 red flags

  1. Guaranteed page-one rankings or instant results. Nobody controls Google. Anyone promising this is lying or using tactics that will hurt you later.
  2. Reports full of vanity metrics. Impressions and reach are not customers.
  3. Long lock-in contracts before proving anything.
  4. They start selling before asking about your business. Same package for everyone means it fits no one.
  5. You can’t reach a real person.
  6. They own your accounts. Your ad accounts, website and domain should always be in your name.
  7. No interest in your sales process. Marketing and sales are one system. Great leads die in a broken sales process.

What good agencies do differently

They start by understanding your business, not pitching services. They fix foundations (offer, message, sales process) before pouring money into ads. They report on numbers that matter. And they tell you the truth, even when it’s not what you want to hear.

How we do it

We built Mirrorline because we were tired of seeing owners burned by agencies that “promised the world and delivered dead fish.” Every engagement starts with a clear look at all eight levels of your business. See how we work, or start with the free Mirrorline Audit.
